Here at UmPhafa we have a number of staff members living on the reserve and of course we have our internships running throughout the year. With all these hungry mouths to feed after a hard day’s work we have over the last few years started to grow many of our own vegetables.
Currently we run three large vegetable patches. We plan our garden for winter and summer to ensure that we get the maximum yield for each season. In winter we stick to the basic vegetables such as carrots, spinach, beetroot and onions. Summer brings additional rain and obviously lots of sun and this means we can plant a much larger variety. Our summer harvest this year consisted of tomatoes, peppers, herbs, melons, pumpkins, butternut, cucumbers and our usual winter crop which grows all year round.
It is an incredibly satisfying feeling picking your own food from the gardens. And we all agree that everything taste so much better as we use no chemicals just the beautiful nutrient rich African soil. Everybody does their little bit to help, whether it is watering or a bit of weeding throughout the week. It all goes towards reducing our Carbon Footprint.
