Ilona Mazan,

A Day in the Life at UmPhafa

Every day brought new adventures. From tracking rhinos and monitoring camera traps to participating in habitat restoration and anti-poaching patrols, the diversity of tasks kept me engaged and constantly learning. I had the opportunity to work alongside experienced conservationists and local staff, learning about wildlife monitoring techniques, data collection methods, and the intricate logistics of managing a nature reserve.

One of the highlights was the rhino monitoring days. Hiking through dense vegetation under the scorching sun, the thrill of spotting these majestic creatures up close was indescribable. Another unforgettable moment was assisting in anti-poaching exercises, which opened my eyes to the real challenges faced in wildlife protection. I was also fortunate to encounter leopards on four different occasions, observing them from up close—an awe-inspiring experience that few are lucky enough to have.

Hands-On Conservation Work

My tasks were far from mundane. I participated in vegetation surveys, freshwater ecology studies, and invasive species removal. Setting up and analyzing data from camera traps provided insights into the nocturnal activities of leopards, hyenas, and even aardvarks. One of the most memorable experiences was witnessing the release of a cheetah into the boma and taking part in daily boma monitoring, ensuring the animal’s health and adaptation to its new environment. I also engaged in fieldwork coordination, equipment maintenance, and working closely with local staff, which enriched my understanding of conservation beyond the ecological aspects.

Enriching Extracurricular Activities

Beyond the core conservation work, UmPhafa offers a range of extracurricular activities that make the experience even more enjoyable while contributing to your knowledge and studies. Visiting the FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre provided insights into wildlife rehabilitation practices, while excursions to reserves like Nambiti Private Game Reserve allowed me to compare different conservation strategies. Night drives and hands-on experiences with wildlife tracking and data analysis added an extra layer of depth to my learning journey. These activities not only broadened my ecological knowledge but also deepened my understanding of the practical realities of conservation work.
