Athletics Day – 11th May 2024
On 11th May, East Coast Turing were invited to attend the Annual Interhouse Athletics meeting at our local school, M.L. Sultan Colenso Primary School. With 620 children aged between 5 and 15, and 20 teachers, this was an opportunity not to be missed!
We arrived early to make sure we didn’t miss the Interhouse presentations. The children were divided amongst the 4 house teams, Canary, Crane, Peacock and Starlings. All holding their banners high, they proceeded to do a lap of the track singing with a live music They then sang the National Anthem with much excitement ready for the competition to start.
Over the course of the day, there were many races and all were to music! The first race, surprising called the potato race, started with 4 potatoes lined up in front of the participants, which they then had to load into a small box and run 100 metres whilst holding the box. Running 100 metres is a challenge on it’s own but the children sprinted up the track with their boxes – it was great to see! The younger children got to take part in the shorter races, including the bean bag race whereas the older children ran the 400 metres – 2 laps of the track!
At lunch, East Coast Turing were able to hand out the 620 donuts they kindly donated for the children and teachers which went down very well and gave the children much needed energy for the relays later in the day.
For the school, it was not just about the winning house but the taking part, being on a Saturday meant that the parents could watch their children. It was a great social event which also included races for the parents.
It was a special day for all involved and one of those experiences that will provide memories that will last a lifetime.
