Over the last month, interns and staff at Colchester Zoo’s UmPhafa Reserve have done an amazing job, renovating the dam outside Elworthy House. The reserve has two filtering systems going into this dam that recycle the waste water from Elworthy house and the staff accommodation. A reed bed filter designed and created by previous interns which filters the water from the kitchen and showers (grey water), plus, our super Scarab Wastewater Treatment System for the rest (black water). Both these systems were put in place a couple of years ago but the reed bed filter needed a bit of TLC.
Now cleaned out and renovated our dam will continue to help us recycle our water and provide a great source of water during these very dry winter months for the animals!
